Fleet Week

Our friends at the wonderful new play OUT OF BODY AND OUT OF MIND have been running weekly podcasts about their show. It’s horribly funny, and so are the podcasts. They have now branched out from audio essays by the characters in their play and interviews with other characters, to interviewing characters in other plays. Very meta.

So, please check out “Gettin’ Manorexic with Chad”, as Chad interviews our very own Jim Ranchhand of the US Navy, from FLEET WEEK, who sounds suspiciously like playwright Mac Rogers.

Lady Liberty’s Demise, song #5

All right. Um… how do I explain this. There are a group of terrorists from the Carribean island of Martinique, and they want to take over the world. To achieve these ends, they are going to blow up the Statue of Liberty and make it look like the United States hates the French (the statue was a gift from France), so the French will declare war on America. They have employed the help of “Tex” a right-wing, internet-freak, bomb expert, who rants about various right wing ideals.

We never said these guys had *good* ideas. Our coast guard comrades overhear this entire song and spend the rest of the play trying to save Lady Liberty.

Lose It In Front, Song #4

One of our sailors thinks she has to dress up like a man in order to serve her country, and the man she has fallen in love with doesn’t know she’s a woman. In this song, she tells us that it’s been like this since junior high school…

Queer at the Pier, Song #3

One of our sailors is worried because he’s been getting a little too intimate with his bunk-mate and he thinks he might be gay. The Chaplain assures him that the Coast Guard doesn’t count anything you do out on the briney. We also get to meet Ravioli and Sachs, our gay couple who are pretty sure they will find wives and live “normal” lives during their one day of shore leave.

Fleet Week Opening, Song #2

This is the opening of the show, where the curtains part and we first see our sailors on the deck of the USS Stonewall, mops in hand looking at the New York City skyline. You also meet the mayor and some real New York City girls.

Libby’s Prologue, song #1
Yes, this is the Statue Of Liberty who sings the prologue. And yes, she’s a bit of a slut. But in a wonderful, old-fashioned sort of way.
